And Now They Play Baseball
August 7th, 2009 by Matthew BleicherResearchers in Japan now stand poised to eliminate a series of high-paying jobs. Something that shouldn’t even be considered in this economy.
The job? Baseball player. They not only have a robot pitcher capable of throwing fast balls, but it can vary its pitches. Now this is nothing that new – anyone that has visited a batting cage has encountered a more primitive version of this. But what about batter?
As soon as they perfect base running and fielding it is all over for America’s favorite pastime.
I kid of course – these robots are actually intended to show how well robots can work together as a team. As you can see, they do a very, very good job. Pink Tentacle reports (based off of the original Japanese, which I cannot read) that down the road they plan on adding more challenges for the “batter” by speeding up the pitches, making them breaking balls and forcing the batter to hit targets.
